Austin, Texas: A Return to Our Favorite Town 🌵🌮🍔
This Spring, we ventured from Florida over to Texas, revisiting one of our favorite spots—Austin. We lived here for a Winter in 2013-14, and ever since, we’ve been itching to return. First stop: Iowa, Louisiana, where we stumbled upon the most amazing rum distillery. After grabbing some orange and coffee rums (seriously, the best rum we’ve ever had), we knew we’d be making another trip back to Louisiana since you can’t find it outside the state.
The Road to Austin: Storms, Traffic & H-E-B 🍹🚗
As with any Spring RV adventure, we braced ourselves for some crazy storms. The roads weren’t the best either, with heavy winds and traffic jams in Lafayette, Houston, and Austin. But nothing could dampen our spirits because we were heading to hill country—and what better way to kick off the return than with a trip to H-E-B, our favorite grocery store. You know you’ve missed it when walking in feels like home!
Hill Country Adventures: BBQ, Tacos, & Wildflowers 🌸🍖
✔️ Barton Creek—We brought our little guy Leo along for a scenic day along Barton Creek. It’s always so beautiful here, and he loved every second of it.
✔️ Connecting with Old Friends—We caught up with some friends from my days at St. Jude Medical. It was great reconnecting and reminiscing about the old days.
✔️ BBQ & Torchy’s Tacos—You can’t visit Austin without indulging in the local BBQ and grabbing a bite at Torchy’s Tacos. Delicious as always.
Wildflower Wonders & Hill Country Delights 🌄🌺
Texas Spring wouldn’t be complete without a wildflower drive, so we set out on the Blue Bonnet Scenic Drive. The fields of bluebonnets were breathtaking, as always.
Exploring Llano & Winery Visits 🍷🌳
One of our favorite spots this time around was Llano—a small town with big flavor. We stumbled upon some incredible BBQ and just soaked in the charm of the town. Nick also treated me to a couple winery visits (because my happy place = wine + nature).
Gourdough’s Donuts & Austin Foodie Fun 🍩🌮
Though we didn’t stay long in Austin, we couldn’t leave without a visit to Gourdough’s for a sweet treat. Sadly, the restaurant where we used to grab burgers on donuts had closed, but their food truck still served up some incredible donut desserts, and we enjoyed every bite.
Final Thoughts: Texas, We’ll Be Back! 💙
Austin, you always have a special place in our hearts. From the BBQ to the tacos to the gorgeous Hill Country landscapes, this stop was a perfect mix of food, fun, and nature. We’ll be back soon!
